Default Issues with Cooling System in 1998 Jetta

Hi all. New to this forum, so be gentle!

We picked up a 1998 Jetta GT for our 18 year old son a few weeks ago and we are having some issues. The Engine Cooling light was occasionally flashing for a bit, not it is on from the moment you start the car. We had been checking the coolant and it appeared to not be leaking. Well, I guess it was a very slow leak because now it is very low and we have stopped driving it until we find the problem. The coolant that is/was in there was Orange...what type would this be? G12? Dex-cool? This is my first time dealing with non-green coolant!

Any common problems in a 98' Jetta that could cause a coolant leak? (I am not a "car guy" if that isn't obvious yet!) We looked under the hood and can see areas where we can tell the coolant had dripped, but can't seem to find something a hole in a hose or something.

I am pretty sure we are going to have to take it to get looked at, but I don't want to drive it without any coolant (or a very small amount), so what should I pour in there just to get it to the shop?

Thanks in advance!
