Default 2016 1.8 turbo burns oil

I have a 2016 jetta that we bought new, the oil light came on and when I checked it the oil was at the bottom of the hash marks. the dealer says that it is normal for the 1.8 turbo engine to burn half a quart of oil in 7000 miles..
I have had several vehicles and it has never been normal for a engine to use any oil between changes. I have an 06 lexus and it uses no oil between changes. 5000 miles. I change it myself and always check the level prior to draining the oil.
Is this normal, or wasthe dealer just feeding me a line?

I also have the same engine and with 3400 miles on it I am down 1/2 a quart. I do a lot of expressway driving and I think the 10,000 miles per change is off base. I am probably going to have oil changed at 5,000 miles max if not sooner. Why is Volkswagen telling everyone 10,000 miles ?

I had a 2004 Volvo s40 turbo and it did the same thing.(burned up oil) I would add oil between full changes. I now have a 2016 Jetta with about 50 miles on it. I plan to keep an eye on the oil level and do my first oil change between 1000-5000 miles. I don't what to go 10,000 miles on a new car before the first change. Maybe I will with the 2nd change.

Where did you get a 2016 1.8? I didn't think you could purchase one with the recall. We have a 2014 with 30,000 miles I have never added oil. We change it at 10k. Most diesel engines do not burn oil because of the loose fit between engine and rings. Unburnt fuel will slip between the cylinder and rings and add oil to the crankcase.

1.8T motors burn oil because the turbo uses oil to cool down. It's a normal function. I replace the oil in my 03 Jetta every 3,000 miles normally and 5,000 max because I travel for work.
