MK4 Jetta (2000, 2.0L) Runs Great but Reluctant to Start
Newbie post here… I’m chasing down starting issues with “Janice,” my daughter’s MK4 Jetta. She runs beautifully once you persuade her to start. I have done a lot of work on her over the last year or so, including plugs, wires and coil pack, EGR hose, crankshaft position sensor, timing belt & tensioner. All codes that lead me to make those repairs are now clear, but I am scratching my head on why she takes at least 2 tries (often 5 or 6) to start. I have removed and thoroughly cleaned the throttle body (looks brand new) which doesn’t seem to have made much of a difference.
This engine includes a fan that connects to the air box and some other hose that runs around back and as far as I can tell goes in the general direction of Albuquerque. I seem to recall that it used to spin up when the ignition was on. If that is supposed to be the case, that could be my problem because it is not doing anything now. I have searched and searched and I cannot find a name for that fan. Can anybody tell me what that fan is called and whether I might be on the right track?
Thanks in advance!
